POET REMEMBEREDWhile visiting Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb, Croatia, I was drawn to the grave of Croatian poet Petar Preradović. I focused on the bas-relief portrait of Preradović and the lower portion of a marble figure placing a floral garland on his grave, along with the flowers and glass lanterns left by visitors.
The contrast between the enduring marble memorial and the temporary offerings surrounding it caught my attention. Fresh and wilted flowers, along with glowing and empty lanterns, reveal the continuing presence of those who come to remember someone who is gone. The scene became a quiet reflection on how we use objects, rituals, and acts of remembrance to maintain a connection with the dead.
