MORNING GLIMPSEFrom the same vantage point along the Jordan River Parkway, I could see a stone lantern in the Japanese Garden within the International Peace Gardens. I chose it as the subject for my morning painting sessions, working on it while waiting for the stronger afternoon light I had chosen for my view of the river and dock.
The eastern morning light caught the edge of the stone, creating a subtle highlight against its shaded form. As the days progressed, changing weather altered the quality and direction of that light, making the scene less predictable than it had been when I began. Working outdoors meant responding to those changes as they happened, allowing the painting to become a record not only of the lantern and its surroundings, but of a particular place and the shifting conditions of the morning.
