CRESCENT JUNCTION

The United States has such a wealth of different landscapes and topological wonders. Living in the Rocky Mountains, we are privileged to see so many examples of how water has shaped the terrain of our planet. One of my favorite examples is the rounded and scooped-out sections of earth seen on the hills and bluffs in eastern Utah and Wyoming. This is a landscape that feels quiet and in-between — a stretch of plains where the sagebrush desert begins to lean toward the sandstone country farther south. The bluffs and rounded hills carry the soft imprint of ancient water, their surfaces scooped and shaped as if waves once washed over them. Almost like seeing a lakebed as fish do, we can appreciate the types of forces water brings to bear on sand and rock over time.

I was drawn to this place for its sense of transition. This land reveals a quiet scarcity of water, of lushness — yet the desert speaks through restraint and patience. The traces of human passage are subtle: a distant road, a hint of irrigation, patterns left by movement across the plains. I wanted to capture that delicate balance, where minimal water, minimal presence, and quiet earth converge.
