COFFEE SHOPWhen the wind picked up at the end of the first day of the ten-day painting period, I fled indoors to the small coffee shop at the Homestead Resort in Midway. Working in paper collage made plein air especially challenging, since even a slight gust could scatter my materials, but this spot offered both shelter and a new point of inspiration. Through the window I was charmed by the gazebo overlooking the golf course, its roof patterned with shifting afternoon shadows and backed by sunlit hills.
I returned each afternoon from 2:00 to 6:00, settling in with whatever snack the shop had on hand and my daily chai latte, and worked to capture the quiet rhythms of the landscape as the light moved across it. Painting from that cozy corner became its own routine, a contrast to the wildness of the wind outside and a reminder that plein air can unfold in unexpected ways.
