CLOUDY CASTLEThis painting was completed during a six-hour plein air session in Midway, Utah. I was drawn to this location as an example of the town’s Swiss architectural influence, a style that has become part of Midway’s visual identity and daily life. The structure’s presence felt both familiar and distinctive, making it a compelling subject to spend extended time with.
Working on site meant responding to changing conditions throughout the day. Passing clouds, shifting light, and wind from nearby traffic all shaped the rhythm of the painting. Positioning myself across the street offered enough shelter to stay engaged with the scene, allowing observation and adjustment to unfold over time. Rather than capturing a single fixed moment, this piece reflects the accumulated experience of being present with a place—how architecture, weather, and attention gradually come together through the act of painting.
