200 WEST

Painted over ten days during the Wasatch Plein Air Festival, this piece captures a quiet stretch of Soapstone Basin in the Wasatch Forest. Each morning, I returned to the same spot overlooking the Provo River, where the water moves steadily beneath the small bridge and rows of trees rise on the far side of the clearing. Throughout the long, sunny hours of painting, I watched fishermen and picnickers drift in and out of the landscape, becoming part of the rhythm of the place.
What made this location especially meaningful were the little routines that formed over those days. The ground squirrels who lived near my easel grew comfortable with my presence, and I found myself sharing my breakfast each morning, a breakfast of an apple and a small jar of almonds, before beginning to paint. The piece became not only a study of the landscape but a record of the quiet companionship and daily rituals that shaped the experience.
